미국에서 활동 중인 작가 클레어 이지영(Claire Jiyoung Lee)이 고향 대전에서 개인전을 갖는다. 6월 22일부터 7월 2일까지 대전직할시 중구 대흥동의 스페이스 테미(대표 최경아)에서 열리는 '자스민 시리즈'는 그가 한국에 와서 갖는 첫 번째 개인전이다. 미국 버지니아에 거주하면서 작업 중인 그는 캔버스에 아크릴물감과 유화물감으로 자연과 정체성 그리고 감정과 향수 등의 주제를 표현한다. 

이번 개인전에는 회화 24점을 선보인다. 그녀의 회화에는 흥미롭게도 늘 소녀가 등장한다. 소녀는 히피펌을 하고 있는 자스민이라는 소녀다. 마치 루이스 캐럴의 동화 '이상한 나라의 앨리스'의 주인공을 연상케 한다. 클레어 이지영은 캔버스에 구름이 떠 있거나 달과 별들이 있는 밤하늘에 자스민을 출연시킨다. 때로는 나뭇잎과 거미줄이 있는 숲속이나 고래와 해파리가 있는 바닷속에 자스민이 등장하기도 한다. 그림 속 자스민은 종종 눈을 감고 있는데 잠을 자는 것 같기도 하고, 꿈을 꾸고 있는 것 같기도 하다.

대전 출생의 클레어 이지영은 1995년 숙명여자대학교 미술공예학과를 졸업하고 디자이너로 일했다. 2001년 미국 뉴욕으로 건너가서 뉴저지의 도자 공방에서 작업하면서 그림도 그렸다. 올해 버지니아주 페어팩스의 모자이크 아트 갤러리에서 첫 개인전을 개최했으며 프로비던스 커뮤니티센터 그룹전에 초대되기도 했다.

Claire Jiyoung Lee, an active artist in the United States, will hold a solo exhibition in her hometown of Daejeon. The 'Jasmine Series', held at Space Temi (CEO Choi Gyeong-ah) in Daeheung-dong, Jung-gu, Daejeon, from June 22nd to July 2nd, is her first solo exhibition in Korea. Living and working in Virginia, USA, she expresses themes such as nature, identity, emotions, and nostalgia, using acrylic and oil paints on canvas.

This solo exhibition presents 24 paintings. Interestingly, girls always appear in her paintings. The girl is Jasmine, who has a hippie perm. It is reminiscent of the main character of Lewis Carroll's fairy tale 'Alice in Wonderland'. Claire Jiyoung Lee places Jasmine on the canvas in a night sky with clouds, or with the moon and stars. Sometimes Jasmine appears in forests with leaves and spider webs, or in the sea with whales and jellyfish. In the picture, Jasmine often closes her eyes, and it looks like she's sleeping or dreaming.

Claire Lee Ji-young, born in Daejeon, graduated from the Department of Arts and Crafts at Sookmyung Women's University in 1995 and worked as a designer. In 2001, she moved to New York, USA, where she worked at a ceramics studio in New Jersey and also painted. This year, she held her first solo exhibition at the Mosaic Art Gallery in Fairfax, Virginia, and was also invited to group exhibitions at the Providence Community Center.
